Surprise winner, Rory McIlroy has finally broken his masters drought after 17 long years, having won the 89th Masters Tournament, held at the iconic Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia. The tournament took place from Thursday, April 10th through Sunday, April 13th.
World #1 golfer, Scottie Scheffler, was the favorite coming into the tournament. The first round was chaotic, the grounds at Augusta are one of the hardest in the world, and you could tell. After the first two days, half of the group gets cut. Some notable names that were cut after two days were Phil Mickelson, Cam Smith and Dustin Johnson.
After the first two days, Justin Rose was leading. On Sunday, which is the final round, Rory McIlroy had a big lead ahead of Justin Rose and Bryson DeChambeau. These guys battled for 18 holes but that wasn’t enough. Rory and Rose went into a playoff which is where both of them play one more hole to see who gets the better score. Rory won in dramatic fashion sinking his birdie putt while Rose settled for par.
Rory is now in the Grand Slam club with only six other players, in which a golfer wins all four major championships including the Masters, the US Open, the British Open and the PGA Championship.
This is a huge milestone for Rory’s career.
