Popular mystery thriller, YOU, has just released its fifth and final season known as the “killer finale”.
This show is one of Netflix’s most talked-about series with its twisted plot and the protagonist’s (Joe Goldberg) obsessions, manipulation, and his take on romance. Each season gets more suspenseful and allows viewers to take a look inside the mind of Joe Goldberg, making each episode more interesting and darker than the last. (SPOILERS AHEAD)
This season first opens up with Joe trying to live a quiet life in New York City with his new wife, Kate, and their son, Henry. He seems to have left his violent past behind him, adapting the nickname “Prince Charming” by social media. Joe has married into a powerful, rich family and is trying to appear to create a normal life, but long-term fans know peace never lasts for Joe, and it doesn’t take long before old habits kick back in.
His return to New York City (his original hometown) is riskier than we might think. Being back in New York pulls Joe back into the darkness of where he first started his killings. Mooney’s bookstore (which is now owned by Joe) reappears and so do many old habits and friends. This season taking place in New York brings the tension we expected, making fans wonder what may happen next, and increasing the suspense for this show’s ending.
One of the season’s biggest surprises is a new character, Louise, AKA “Brontë”. Brontë pretends to be a journalist, but has a much bigger goal: expose Joe for all the horror he has caused, and get revenge for her past mentor, Guinevere Beck (Joe’s first lover, and one of his victim’s, from season one).
Brontë sees right through Joe’s “Prince Charming” act making him fall in love with her faster. She pushes him to be the most violent and dangerous person he is creating very intense moments. With Brontë trying to expose him for all the things he’s done, she is also risking her life everyday.
Towards the end of the show, an intense scene unfolds as Brontë lures Joe into the woods and accuses him directly, calling him a murderer. By confronting him she provokes a raw, dangerous reaction out of him, recording him the whole time.
While many people feel differently about the ending of this show, it’s great because it brings a satisfying end to Joe’s story by finally making him face the consequences of his actions when he’s put in jail for life. Overall, we give this season five out of five stars and consider it the best season of this show.
