Over the past week, The Flying Onion has been attempting to determine the best local ice cream. We visited some of the most popular ice cream places around: Cherry Farm Creamery and Richardson’s Ice Cream.
When we visited, we rated these ice creams based on their best mint chocolate chip flavor, in order to compare the same flavor. We considered the size of the chocolate chunks in the ice cream but also the overall taste of the ice cream itself .
Cherry Hill Review
We first visited Cherry Farm Creamery, just over the Danvers/Beverly line. When we first arrived we were met with a large line of people. When we received our ice cream, we noticed that the chocolate chunks weren’t very large and the ratio of chocolate chunks to ice cream was inadequate. Our service included a short wait, but that’s to be expected on a hot, sunny afternoon. The ice cream was reasonable, at $6.75 for a small, and we believe it was worth the money.
Richardson’s Review
When we arrived at Richardson’s we were met by another huge line of people waiting for ice cream most likely due to the sunny weather. But we only had to wait about ten minutes. We did notice that both creameries included a golf range which and Richardson’s also has a batting cage and mini golf. These attractions are a huge hit in both locations, which adds to the people who come for both those and ice cream.
When we were given our ice cream, we found Richardson’s mint chocolate chip was the authentic flavor we were hoping for. The ice cream was loaded with chocolate chunks and the right amount of mint flavoring bringing it together. Richardson’s not only had the better mint chocolate chip, but the small was the same price as Cherry Hill’s, at $6.75.
However, although Richardson’s ice cream had better tasting ice cream it might be more out of the way for people in Danvers, because of their location in Middleton.
Our overall thoughts between the two creameries was that Richardson’s had the better mint chocolate chip because of not only the larger portion but it was for the same price as Cherry hill.
