Congratulations to our graduating editor-in-chief, Julia Boyd, upon completing an impressive four years here at Danvers High. Julia has been writing for The Flying Onion throughout her high school career and has been the backbone of our publication throughout this school year.
As a senior and editor-in-chief, Julia has been an invaluable foundation for The Flying Onion. She was a leader in adopting theflyingonion.com, regularly meeting with our technology staff and teaching herself the intricacies of design and layout on the site. She managed to do all of this while still leaving time to support the hard copy of The Flying Onion, writing multiple articles for our Senior Spotlight series, as well as for our spicy celebrity gossip column, Talon Talks, and even on such serious topics as the wrongful deportation of a Salvadoran immigrant. Throughout the year, she served as teacher/advisor Ms. Carnevale’s right-hand-woman in making sure the layout, design, production, and distribution all went off without a hitch. Too many Thursdays of this past year saw Julia fighting the good fight with the malfunctioning copier/printer in the mailbox room of the main office.
Last year, Julia pursued her passion for writing, penning pieces on topics likes Kate Middleton’s cancer diagnosis, the State of the Union address, local ballot questions (of the fall of ’23), and the death of longtime Danvers legend, Mrs. Hot Dog.
Julia was first introduced to the paper as a burgeoning freshman reporter, where she hungrily took on any assignment thrown her way. She covered a multitude of topics, including Taylor Swift’s epic Eras tour and the groundbreaking show, Heartstopper.
In addition to her role with The Flying Onion, Julia was also an active member of multiple groups and teams throughout her years here at DHS. She served as secretary of the National English Honor Society, was a member of the World Language National Honor Society, the National Honor Society, Student Town Advisory Committee, was captain of the girls’ swim team (after swimming throughout high school), and was a member of the girls’ tennis team. Julia was also one (of only two) school committee student representatives, requiring her to attend all school committee meetings and provide updates to the committee about the high school.
As a junior, Julia also served as a community leader for Community Block. She was also a vital member of Women of the World throughout her four years at DHS and could often be heard talking about legendary women during the morning announcements during Women’s History Month. And Julia managed all of this while holding down a part time job teaching little kids how to swim at the Goldfish Swim School.
Clearly, Julia’s contributions to The Flying Onion – and to all of Danvers High – were marked by her commitment to excellence. Although we will miss her dearly next year, we wish her the best of luck as she sets off to study at George Washington University in the fall, where she will be majoring in political science and minoring in journalism.
