Friday, May 23rd, Danvers High School hosted the annual Northeastern Conference (NEC) Track and Field Championships. This event brought the top athletes from different towns for a full day of competition.
The meet featured a wide range of events including relays, jumps, throws, miles, hurtles and sprints. Many students on the Danvers High track team placed in these events.
On the girls team, junior Addie Lamar placed 5th in the 1-mile race, freshman Hailey O’Connor placed 4th in the 1-mile race, sophomore Grace Conklin placed 6th in the 2-mile race, junior Ava Patch placed 6th in the half-mile race, freshman Daniella Scarpaci placed 4th in the 400-meter dash and 6th in the long jump, freshman Flavia Locilento placed 5th in the 400-meter hurdles, freshman Madeleine Hanas placed 7th in the high jump, and senior Olivia Page placed 7th in the javelin.
Sophomore Tess Ryan also broke two school records in one meet while placing 2nd in the girls 200-meter dash and 3rd in the girls 100-meter dash.
On the boys team, senior JJ Rooney placed 2nd in the 1-mile race, senior Charlie Garlin placed 6th in the half-mile race, junior Bubba Martin placed 8th in the 200-meter dash, senior Michael Rinella placed 8th in the 400-meter dash, junior Zach Cotter placed 7th in the 110-meter hurdles, junior Luca Tirella placed 1st in the high jump, and junior Zach Cotter placed 2nd in the triple jump.
Senior Will Conklin also beat his own school record while placing 2nd in the boys 2-mile race.
“It was really awesome that Tess broke two school records in one meet,” track team member Ava Patch commented. “That was big for the girls team.”
Both the boys track team and the girls track team of DHS placed 5th overall in the NEC Championships. The team is moving onto states, which is the weekend of May 31st.*
