On Sunday October 12th the Topsfield Fair was notified about a bomb threat. Massachusetts State police found the person who made the threat who was then arrested. Police have yet to release his name.
After the arrest, the male in custody then told them the bomb was in his vehicle that was found at the fair grounds. Police had shut down Route 1 as Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad technicians investigated. After the bomb squad further investigated, no bomb was found.
The threat was made aware at 7:20 a.m. and the grounds were cleared by 8:50 a.m., allowing the fair to open an hour and half later than regularly scheduled. According to a statement made by Topsfield Fair organizers, “A multi-agency response followed our safety protocols and after a complete sweep of the grounds, the fairground was deemed safe and will be open at 9:30 a.m.”
State police reminded everyone to speak up if they happen to witness anything suspicious. “If you see something, say something,” police said in a statement, enhancing the need to report suspicious activity.
The fair then stayed open throughout Sunday, and the following day which was the last day to attend.
