The Flying Onion is excited to announce our next “Senior Spotlight”, Kai Gaff! Throughout their past few years at DHS, Kai has involved themselves in a variety of activities, primarily so in the arts department.
To start, Kai has been a captain of our color guard team since the winter season of their sophomore year. Within this positon, they serve as a bridge between the team and the coaches.
Kai has also been heavily involved in our music and theater department. In the past, they’ve been involved in Once On This Island, This is Not a Pipe Dream, and Love/Sick. Most recently, they took on the supporting role as the principal, Mr. Duvall, in the DHS Acts production of Mean Girls. Kai is also been a member of Skywave, one of our a capella groups, since last year.
Furthermore, Kai is a member of our LGBTQ+ alliance club, PRISM, where they hold an officer position as treasurer. They’re also a part of the Dungeons and Dragons group with Mr. Martinez.
“Kai is compassionate till the end and utterly loyal to their friends,” said senior Jesse Poland.”They lift their friends up with their strength and keep them there with kindness”
Teacher Mr. Matt Bencal, who had Kai in ELA last year, had high praise for Kai.
“Kai is great,” said teacher Mr. Bencal. “Sure, they’re kind and thoughtful and a great person. But as a student, they reliably pays attention, answers questions, helps their classmates and is a leader in an unexpected, quiet way. I wish I had more students like Kai – they’re that awesome.”
After graduation in June, Kai is planning on pursuing a career in nursing, and their top school is currently the University of New Hampshire. Best of luck, Kai!
