Zach Cotter competes in State Championship
by Julia Boyd
At the end of February, junior swimmer Zach Cotter participated in the State Championship at Boston University for his signature event, the 100-yard backstroke. The prior weekend, he attended the Sectionals meet at MIT.
Cotter originally qualified for Sectionals in the event at the NEC Conference meet back in January by only one-one thousandth of a second. At both Sectionals and States, he crushed this time, swimming his personal-record and just missing breaking the school record by a second — a goal he’s aiming for next year.
Further, Cotter was just selected as an NEC All-Conference by coach Meghan Beaullieu and the other conference coaches. Each year, the swimmers that won an event become All-Conference, and all the coaches choose one additional swimmer. When Beaulieu mentioned Cotter’s name to the other coaches, it was a unanimous decision by all to select Cotter.
With just one season remaining in his high school career, it’s clear that Cotter has made a significant impact on his team, and The Flying Onion can’t wait to see what he does his senior year.
Season-ending loss for girls basketball
by Kayda Brown and Alexis Vramis
Danvers girls basketball wrapped up the season last week with a 14-7 record. The girls ended the season with a 53-38 loss on the road against Holliston.
Leading scorer for Danvers, junior captain Angie Djoko came out of the game with a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds. The team also had help from junior captain Kayda Brown with 10 points and 5 rebounds.
Hollistons victory bumped up their record to 8-13, and ended their season as a 8-14 team after their loss against number one seed, Medfield on Friday.
Senior captain, Gianna Ferraro says, “Even though we came out with a loss, this year has made a big positive change in our program.”
The girls want to thank everyone for their support throughout the season and showing up for their games!
