Tuesday, September 10th marked the long awaited debate between the Democratic and Republican nominees, former President Donald J. Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. Taking place in Philadelphia, it lasted about an hour and forty-five minutes and was the first time that Harris and Trump had formally met face to face.
Kamala focused on the policy and economic plan to have tax breaks from new small business and first-time home owners. Kamala repeatedly stated that she “has a plan” compared to Trump stating that he has “concepts of a plan”.
Later, Trump explained how Kamala says she’s going to do all of these things and continues to say “Why hasn’t she done it? She’s been there for three and a half years.”
Mr. Trump took the credit for ending Roe v. Wade and described the six Supreme Court justices that ended this constitutional right as “genius”. But when asked by moderators if he would veto a national abortion, he could not and would not answer the question.
Though CNN states that Harris “dominated” the debate, Trump has a strong, devoted base of seven swing states that are Pennssylanvia, Michgian, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona, and Nevada.
Throughout the entire debate, Harris tended to laugh at Trump’s comments, shaking her head or smirking at his responses. Trump stood looking forwards towards the camera, appearing unamused. With everything being considered, this election is a coin flip and could go either way.
Following the debate, Harris received a boost from musician and pop culture figure, Taylor Swift. Swift signed her post with, “Taylor Swift, Childless Cat Lady”, referring to the comments of Trump. This created a sense of support and engagement to the women of America. Taylor Swift’s comment became a huge endorsement for Harris and influenced 337,000 people to register their vote from her link.
