With Anora taking home a jaw dropping five awards including “Best Picture” and “Best Director”, we celebrate the 97th Academy Oscar awards which occurred last weekend. Anora, a film about a young Brooklyn-based prostitute who marries the son of a Russian oligarch, swept the night, to the surprise of many.
One of the surprises for Anora was a Best Actress win for 25-yr-old Mikey Madisen. Many thought this award would go to veteran actress Demi Moore for her role in Substance, about the extremes an older woman goes to in order to keep her job and stay relevant.
The 97th Academy Oscars took place in Dolby Theater in Hollywood. Anora winning these awards is actually more special then people might think because it ties the record set by Walt Disney for the most Academy awards won by a single film in a year.
In addition, actress Zoe Saldana made history as the first person of Dominican descent when she won the award for Best Actress in a supporting role for her performance in Emilia Perez, playing a lawyer who helps a drug cartel leave his old life and transition to being a woman. This puts Saldana among some of the top stars in the acting world.
