Over the past year, The Flying Onion, has had the honor of having senior Ava Patch as a part of the writing team.
During her time at The Flying Onion, Ava wrote numerous articles, including stories on topics ranging from the death of Ukrainian refugee Irayna Zarutska’s to coverage about the Brown/MIT shooting and Lindsey Vonn’s challenges at the Olympics. Ava also used her love for sports to write about topics like the Boston Red Sox games and the Danvers’ girls track team.
In addition to journalism and academics, Ava was a dedicated and committed athlete. She played for four years on the Danvers’ field hockey team where she helped to lead the team to an NEC title her sophomore year and she also spent her senior season as captain. When not on the field hockey field, she competed in indoor and outdoor track for multiple years.
When away from sports, Ava also participated in the DHS Community Leadership program, worked as the general manager for the Falcon’s Nest, and served as the president for the Best Buddies club. She was also a member of the National English Honor Society, National World Language Honor society, and a part of the Joanne Paquette Academic All Star team, which acknowledges superior scholar-athletes.
After her internship in the Community Leadership program with Mr. Black and Mr. Mielcarek, Ava plans to continue her studies and attend the University of South Carolina, where she will pursue a degree in pharmacy. While she will be missed at DHS, the impact she leaves behind though her leadership, dedication, and compassion will not be forgotten.
