The city of Gloucester is getting ready for one of its most beloved Italian traditions, the annual St. Peter’s Fiesta, which will be taking place this year from June 24th to 28th.
This event celebrates St. Peter, a fisherman, and honors a strong Italian-American fishing heritage. The celebration has been a community tradition since 1927 and attracts thousands of visitors each year.
Throughout the five-day celebration, visitors can enjoy carnival rides, live music, local foods, religious ceremonies, and many family-friendly activities. One of the most famous events is the Greasy Pole Contest. This contest has contestants attempting to run across a greased pole over the water, in an attempt to grab the flag at the end. The competition draws large crowds and has become one of the Fiesta’s most anticipated and recognizable traditions.
Another popular tradition is the Seine Boat Races, which take place on Pavilion Beach throughout the weekend. Teams of twelve crew members compete in historic boats, rowing mile-long courses and challenging others.
This festival will conclude on Sunday with a large outdoor mass that is attended by hundreds and often led by a visiting bishop or cardinal. Following that, a large parade will go throughout the streets of Gloucester before the annual Blessing of the Fleet.
As the city prepares for another year of festivals, many are looking forward to continuing the tradition that has been an important part of Gloucester history.
