From November 20th through November 22nd, Danvers High School’s theater program is putting on their annual fall musical, Hadestown. Hadestown, a beloved and renowned tragedy, was introduced to broadway in 2019 and has been a pop culture hit ever since. The show has won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
Hadestown tells the intertwined love stories of two couples: Orpheus and Eurydice (based on the ancient Greek myth), and Hades and Persephone. When Eurydice is lured away by a deal with Hades for security and comfort, Orpheus must journey to the underworld to bring her back, a quest complicated by the struggle for survival and the theme of industry versus nature. The music of Hadestown, a mix of folk opera, jazz and blues, combined with its contemporary steampunk themes and settings, gives the show a fresh take on ancient Greek mythology.
Hadestown also offers some familiar faces to the DHS stage. Senior Kaelin Hampe is starring as Orpheus, with junior Brooke Willichoski starring as Eurydice. Seniors Dailin Martinez and Alejandro Bourdier are playing Persephone and Hades, respectively, and senior Piper Brett is playing Hermes. The fates are being played by sophomore Emma Anderson, junior Hope Panagoulias, and senior Ella Guitard (myself). The show also has an incredibly talented ensemble, including a specific team of Featured Workers (similar to a Greek chorus) and a team of Featured Dancers.
Performances will be on Thursday, November 20th at 7:00pm, Friday, November 21st at 7:00pm, Saturday, November 22nd at 2:00pm and Saturday, November 22nd at 7:00pm. Tickets can be bought at the website danversperformingarts.org. We hope to see you there!
