Last week, Disney took Jimmy Kimmel Live! Off the air after Jimmy Kimmel made controversial comments about the accused killer of conservative activist, Charlie Kirk. The brief suspension from ABC quickly became a major debate about free speech, politics, and corporate influence. When Kimmel returned a few days later, his emotional monologue brought even more attention to the issue.
Disney executives, led by CEO Robert Iger, chose to cancel the show just hours before it was set to tape. This decision followed pressures from several directions. Federal Communications Commission chairman Brendan Carr warned ABC that Kimmel’s remarks could mislead the public and suggested the network might face consequences.
Following Carr’s statements, major station groups like Nexstar and Sinclair threatened to stop broadcasting the show, and even their advertisers voiced their concerns. Executives also worried that Kimmel’s planned monologue that night would escalate the controversy. The suspension left Jimmy Kimmel Live! off the air in dozens of markets across the country.
The suspension sparked strong reactions from many people. President Trump called Kimmel “untalented” and said he should be fired, and many conservative supported Disney’s decision.
Meanwhile, comedians, unions, and free-speech advocates criticized Disney for giving in to the political pressure. Hollywood unions, representing hundreds of thousands of workers, spoke out against the suspension as well as protests that took place outside Disney’s headquarters.
The anger extended to Disney’s own customers. Many people announced they were canceling their Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ subscriptions as a protest. Social media filled with screenshots of cancellations. Some demonstrators outside Disney’s Burbank studio said they had cut their subscriptions too. Actor Misha Collins and former Democratic staffer Christopher Hale were among those who went public with their boycotts.
On September 18, Kimmel came back to television with a serious and emotional monologue. He admitted his earlier comments might have seemed badly timed, but he never wanted to make light of Kirk’s death. He also criticized the Trump administration’s threats against ABC as “anti-American” and thanked Republican lawmakers who supported his right to speak, even if they disagreed with him.
