This spring, the National Science Honor Society opened a chapter here at Danvers High. The National Science Honor Society (NSHS) at Danvers was initiated by senior Ashley Freitas, originally during her junior year.
Ashley began working on starting this with Mr. Jeff Gallo during her AP Biology class, and although Mr. Gallo supported her, he said that she took most of the initiative to bring the honor society to Danvers.
NSHS consists of a four person leadership team who is nominated by the members of the society. Each of these four roles has its own area of focus, such as peer tutoring, guest lectures, finance, and elementary schools. The leaders are chosen their junior year and stay in that position until the end of their senior year when the next leaders are chosen, so that future leaders have a chance to learn from current leaders before completely taking over. The current leaders as of right now are juniors Marcus Klingler, Gina Duval, Keegan Crowley, and Amanda Hartley.
Getting into the National Science Honor Society is a little different then most of the other societies. For starters, the NHSH is a teacher nominated system, in which a google form is sent out to all of the science teachers so they may nominate students who fit the overall criteria. In addition, students need to have a 3.0 minimum unweighted GPA and a 1.5 unweighted GPA in their current science class. The final step of the process is a different google form sent out to all teachers asking about the nominated students characteristics – if they are hardworking, honest, and demonstrate an ability to be involved in a society like this.
Any students inducted into the NSHS are expected to participate in community service hours, attend guest lectures, and be involved in peer tutoring. The society is also looking at building relationships with local elementary schools to be able to send members over to work with the elementary students on their science learning. The advisor of the science honor society at Danvers, Mr. Gallo, said that “The society is looking for self starters who are passionate about science.”
The National Science Honor Society is a great addition to the multiple other honor societies offered at Danvers.
