On Wednesday May 6th, State Trooper Kevin Trainor was killed in a collision on duty when responding to a wrong-way driver. Trainor, 30, was pronounced dead after sustaining fatal injuries early Wednesday morning after his cruiser was struck by a Jeep traveling south in the northbound lane on Route 1 in Lynnfield. The wrong-way driver, 50-year-old Hernan Marrero of Roslindale, was also pronounced dead at the scene
According to State Police Colonel Geoffrey Noble, Trainor’s public safety detail had just ended, as he was heading home when police got a 911 call about the wrong-way driver around 2 a.m. At 2:04 am, when attempting to respond to the crisis, Trainor’s unmarked SUV was hit head-on by Marrero’s Jeep, resulting in the horrific crash.
Trainor had been assigned to serve on the Troop A Community Action Team, headquartered on 485 Maple St. in Danvers, nearby where the collision occurred.
Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker is investigating the crash, including why the driver was on the wrong side of the highway, which is still unclear.
National FBI Director Kash Patel paid homage to Trainor in a post on X social media platform on Friday evening. Patel noted “Rest in Peace, Trooper Kevin Trainor of the Massachusetts State Police. End of Watch: May 6, 2026.”
Patel also posted, “The @FBI sends our prayers and condolences to his family, friends and colleagues left behind. They will have our full support.”
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey also added that while “it’s no comfort to a family to know… [but] were it not for his actions, there would be a lot of grieving families today – and that’s a trooper doing his job.”
For days following the accidents, neighbors left flowers, food and other items on a State Police cruiser parked in front of the Danvers headquarters, in remembrance of Trainor.
