Wicked: For Good, was the sequel that fans have been waiting for. This was a cinematic interpretation of the well-known musical Wicked. Though many enjoyed the film, there were lots of mixed opinions on it, including from our two reviewers.
For the one of us who isn’t really interested in musicals and is new to Wicked, it was a great piece with a beautiful message. But at almost two and half hours, the film was not worth the watch. The story dragged and was lengthy and in some moments, our reviewer got lost in the plot due to unnecessary scenes. For example, the scenes where Prince Fierro and Elphaba go back to Elphaba’s house. On the other hand, that the graphics, makeup, and costumes were done so incredibly well that, that part was enjoyable, including Arianna’s “Galinda” outfits, that were stunning.
As for our other reviewer, who had seen the musical a few years ago and was looking forward to it. They loved the first film but didn’t enjoy the sequel as much as they expected to. The acting and music was great but there were fewer catchy songs in the second one and the film itself felt like it was a little long. However, some parts that were more rushed over when they seemed important to the plot. This included the major sene towards the end, where Glinda watches as Elphaba “melts”.
DHS senior and musical theater connoisseur, Piper Brett, expressed her enjoyment of the film.
“I thought it was a great cinematic interpretation as someone who saw the original musical,” Piper said. “I think it’s important to introduce Wicked to the next generation. The acting and music was very well executed by the casting, and by director Jon M. Chu’s choices throughout the film.”
Many fans were surprised with the look of the cast, specifically the health of certain cast members, expressing their concerns for main actresses Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, and Michelle Yeoh, as each looks “malnourished” or just unwell.
But aside from that, the show itself has gotten good reviews and many fans think that it is an exceptional interpretation of the Wicked musical.
