After surviving a week of midterms and a crazy snow storm, The Flying Onion returns with a new round of Senior Spotlight, highlighting this week’s featured senior, and fellow Flying Onion member… Zachary Cotter!
To kick things off, Zach is involved in multiple sports here at DHS. He recently served as the varsity soccer goalie this past season, is currently one of our swim captains, and also a member of the spring track team.
Zach has been playing soccer since he was eight, along with swimming. During his freshman year on the JV soccer team, he earned the Coaches’ Award and later moved up to varsity during his sophomore year. Zach shared his mindset about his involvement with sports,
“I would say overall I do sports more for the fun of it and to improve,” Zach commented.
Zach also joined track and field during his freshman year and was titled MVP. That same year, he joined a relay team alongside three seniors and placed second, right next to a dominant team. This specific achievement awarded him with the Future Falcon Leader Award.
Guidance counselor Ms. Whitney McNeilly spoke about Zach as a student.
“A theme in Zachary’s life is his remarkable work ethic and readiness to take on challenges. Zachary is a standout athlete earning recognition for multiple sports,” Ms. McNeilly said. “He is selfless and puts others before himself. In Zach’s freshman year at DHS, his JV soccer team didn’t have a goalie. Zach stepped up and volunteered to fill that position. He had never played goalie before but was still happy to help. Zach continued his position as goalie this past fall on the varsity soccer team.
Friend and teammate of Zach, senior Luca D’Angelo, also shared a few words,
“Zach’ a dominant three-sport athlete who has won awards in all and is on his way to break school records in track and swim,” D’Angelo said. “He is also known for his high rank in the video game rocket league, competing at state level.”
With everything, Zach has contributed greatly to the DHS community in many ways, including sports, academics, and his willingness to help others. Currently, Zach is undecided on what college to go to but is looking forward to studying aerospace engineering.
