The Winter Olympics officially began earlier this month, and are being held in both Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.
The current medal standings* show that Norway is in first place, having won seven gold medals, two silver, and four bronze. Switzerland at second place with four gold medals, one silver, and two bronze. The United States is at third with three gold medals, five silver, and two bronze. Germany is tied with Sweden at fourth place with three gold medals, two silver, and one bronze.
Some highlights included American Ilia Malinin, also known as The Quad God, a young 21-year old athlete securing a gold medal in the men’s figure skating event for the U.S. And Breezy Johnson winning gold for the U.S. in the women’s alpine skiing event. As well as Olympic cross-country skier, Ben Ogden winning a silver medal, making it the first time for an American man to medal in this event since 1976.
On a different note, randomly and recently Olympic medals have been breaking and snapping off their ribbons. After Breezy Johnson won gold in the women’s downhill, it also reported that her medal broke in three pieces, with Johnson exclaiming it was from her “jumping in excitement”. In addition, gold medalist, figure skater Alysa Liu Olympic posting a Tik Tok on how her medal completely broke off the ribbon. Of course, these incidents don’t take away from their amazing wins.
