Late Wednesday afternoon on September 10th, conservative political activist Charlie Kirk was fatally shot while at an event at Utah Valley University. Aside from his activism, Kirk was best known for his direct involvement in encouraging youth to vote for President Trump in the 2024 election.
Last week, Kirk was beginning his “Prove Me Wrong” tour, with his first stop at Utah Valley University. Throughout the months of September and October, Kirk had planned to travel all around the country to different colleges as a guest speaker. His next stop would’ve been Colorado State University, as he was planning on visiting a new campus every week.
Kirk was answering a question that referred to gun violence at the time the fatal shot rang. The tragedy was captured on video from multiple angles, with many people posting the video online of the live assasination. Witnesses report seeing Kirk rapidly slump backwards as chaos erupted on the campus.
The shot appeared to have been fired from the rooftop of a building 200 yards away.
Shortly after the shooting, a suspect was taken into custody, yet was released soon after. Hours later, FBI Director Kash Patel reported that a second man had been taken into custody but was released.
As of this weekend, a suspect has been taken into custody: 22 year old Tyler Robinson. Prior to the shooting, Robinson attended Utah State University on a four-year merit scholarship, but he dropped out after one semester.
Robinson was identified to be the man in the previously taken photos from the incident, and he surrendered to police on September 12th with the persuasion of his father. He was arrested on suspicion of crimes of aggravated murder, felony discharge of a fire-arm, and obstruction of justice.
Robinson’s motives are unknown, but his parents shared that a week before the event at Utah Valley University, Robinson expressed his hatred for Kirk and mentioned him visiting the state. While Robinson himself was not registered to vote, both of his parents were registered Republicans.
Authorities claim that the shooting was a “targeted attack”, as Kirk is a prominent known political activist who was a close ally of President Trump. The President released a statement expressing sympathy to Kirk and his family, and in his remarks he claimed that the “radical left” was responsible for the catastrophe.
Public opinion on Kirk is mixed, as Kirk had previously stated that “It’s worth to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment to protect our other God-given rights”.
Regardless, this is the most recent in a series of politically-motivated violent attacks (targeting members of both political parties). The increase in number and gravity of these attacks have both officials and Americans – from all political persuasions – highly concerned.
