Last Monday our boys varsity track team competed, and won against Gloucester in the NEC championships, sending them to top place and winning the title of number one. Our Danvers Falcons ended with a leading score of 73, ten more points than the opposing team. Our students practiced hard to get this title, running a mile everyday to warm up.
While it is amazing that Danvers students won the NECs, these students had to work very hard over the past couple of months to get to this point. Our team has had to put in a lot of their time, and patience to be successful.
These students have also stayed consistent with practices and learning from their mistakes to help them grow. This team has been showing up to meets all over the state to show what they can really do. They have learned new skills each day and developed abilities on how to work together in certain situations.
For example, in the 4×100 relay against two Gloucester groups, Owen Shanbar, Bryce Kassiotis, Michael Albano, and Zachary Dunn success led to first place with the score of 46.21a. These students showed great sportsmanship and team effort on how they learned to work together to complete it.
One of our students from the track team, junior Will Conklin explained how the group of JJ Rooney, Sean Moore, Charlie Garlin and he have been running together since freshman year. He explains that being on the track team, he’s had to put in an enormous amount of effort to be better and fix certain problems he has experienced in the past. This group has accomplished so many things, breaking school and meet records over the past couple of years of being on the team. They show that running may take a lot of time but with growth, even beginners can be very successful at something over time.
Will shares a little bit of his experiences so far.
“The four of us are just happy to see that our hard work for straight four years now is paying off in ways we could have never imagined,” he said about the team’s successes. “Winning is great but the thing we appreciate the most is being together.”
The DHS track team shows that students can be brought together by things they enjoy. Danvers High is extremely proud of all the students on the team for everything they have accomplished over the season and we are excited to see what else is in store for them.
